Whenever Southampton and Liverpool do business, it is usually the former that lose out, depending on which way you look at it.
The coastal club have pocketed millions of cash from the Merseyside outfit over the years, but in turn they have lost some of their key players.
Adam Lallana is one of a handful who defected from St Mary’s to Anfield in 2014 with the hope of a more successful career.
The midfielder eventually became a crucial part of the Liverpool team, but over the last 12 months or so injuries have hampered his progress.
Lallana now finds himself on the fringes of Jurgen Klopp’s XI, and it looks as though he will struggle to cement a regular spot in the line-up.
The 30-year-old has only made four appearances in all competitions this season, and just two of them were starts.
Even though his game time has been minimal lately, Lallana has proven during his time at Anfield that he can be an influential figure.
Southampton are crying out for a bit of creativity in the middle and final third following a dismal run of seven winless games.
The club look set to be in another relegation battle unless they find some form quickly, and that turnaround could be possible if they re-signed Lallana in the January transfer window.
The England international’s shine has dulled somewhat over the last year, but he would feel like he had something to prove if he returned to St Mary’s, and that can only benefit the team.

As mentioned in the infographic, which includes figures from the Premier League and European competitions, Lallana has demonstrated his attacking nous.
He may have only netted 20 goals since signing for the Reds, but his attempts have surpassed 100, which shows that he can be in the right place at the right time.
The number of Lallana’s interceptions indicate that he can still read the game well, and even though he is not in his best form right now, he would certainly be an upgrade on Southampton’s current options.
The transfer fee and wages could be an issue, but given that he is not a regular under Klopp, the Saints should consider a January swoop.
