Rangers supporters have taken to Twitter to express their devastation after seeing that Steven Davis had failed to recover from injury in time to make the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic.
The former Southampton man suffered a foot injury against Aberdeen on Wednesday, leaving Steven Gerrard and the rest of the Gers squad sweating over Davis’ availability for the massive game against arch-rivals Celtic.
Sadly for Rangers and for the Northern Ireland captain – who has 107 caps for his country – the midfielder could not recover in time to face Neil Lennon’s side, leaving Gerrard without a key player for such a significant tie.
The 34-year-old Davis wasn’t even fit enough to be named on the bench, and these Rangers supporters on Twitter certainly weren’t happy to be without the veteran.
This fan said that he was “gutted” that Davis couldn’t play, and felt that the midfielder would be “greatly missed” given his excellent form throughout the current campaign.
Another supporter agreed with that sentiment, saying that the experienced ace’s absence was a “big blow”.
Additionally, one fan said that they might even cry after seeing that Davis’ name was not amongst the starting XI or even the bench.
“Huge blow” and “huge, huge miss” were the flavours of the day from two other Rangers fans, with one mentioning that Gerrard will need some young, inexperienced players to step up in Davis’ absence such as Joe Aribo – in fact, both supporters name-dropped the former Charlton man as someone who needed to perform.
Lastly, this fan simply said that they were “gutted” not to see Davis in the squad.
Unfortunately, their pre-match concerns were perhaps valid as Celtic ran out 1-0 winners in the Betfred Cup final without Davis involved, in a game where Alfredo Morelos missed a penalty.
In other Rangers news, these fans on Twitter weren’t happy with one man’s performance against Hamilton a few weeks ago…
