As reported by Italian outlet Tuttosport, Chelsea have made a massive bid for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer.
What’s the story?
Having already completed major deals for the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko this summer, Antonio Conte is clearly in the market for more talent this summer.
With the future of Diego Costa in doubt and with the club having missed out on signing Romelu Lukaku, the Italian needs to add some quality in the forward areas if they’re to replicate last season’s success next term.
Chelsea fans may be pleased then that the club have been shopping with serious intent recently with Tuttosport reporting that they bid a massive £88m for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain.
The outlet says the bid was dismissed by the UEFA Champions League finalists but it at least shows the Blues have serious ambition this summer.
Should they return for him?
Higuain has been one of the greatest strikers in Europe for almost ten years now, after moving from River Plate to Real Madrid in 2007. Since then he’s scored a massive 244 goals in all competitions in two leagues, including a single season high of 38 goals for Napoli in 2015/16.
Still just 29 years of age, he’s still in his prime and would be a massive addition to the Chelsea attack if they can get any sort of deal done. He has the kind of trophy winning experience that can help sustain their recent progress.
If Juventus are reportedly rejecting sums of £88m though, we’re not sure going beyond that would make much sense for Chelsea, as long as Antonio Conte can identify another capable target. Even by 2017 standards, that’s a lot of money for a player with limited future potential.
